Schools are responsible for providing a free and appropriate public education to all students including those on the autism spectrum. The heart of providing those services lies within each teacher and each classroom door these children enter. This workshop will provide participants with a definition of best educational practices for students on the spectrum and various ways of ensuring that individual social, behavioral and academic needs are met.

Participants will be able to define best educational practices for students on the autism spectrum, identify classroom practices that are effective for students on the autism spectrum, and implement several classroom practices that are effective for students on the autism spectrum.

Dr. Buford is the founder and Executive Director of Behavior Consulting Services. She has taught children and adults on the autism spectrum in school and residential settings. She is a former faculty member at the University of Houston, Clear Lake and Clemson University. She is a provider of applied behavior analysis services to children and adolescents with autism and also consults with school districts in the areas of positive behavior support, behavior management and programmatic issues in autism service delivery.

Workshop Fees:

  • $250 for 4 days Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedules (ADOS) for five participants is FULL; however, a waiting list is available.

This training will consist of two separate registrations for one workshop. The session, which is full, is a four-day session designed to offer reliability training for the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedules (ADOS) for five people. These people will participate in the lecture and demonstration portion of the training as well as the practicum component. At the end of the training, these trainees will be ready to give the ADOS with supervision. Once they have successfully completed the supervision / reliability components required, they will be considered “reliable” on the ADOS.

The training is structured so that 15 additional people can attend the lecture and demonstration component of the training. This will provide the level of information provided by WPS two-day “Introduction to ADOS.” In addition, these 15 trainees can attend the additional two days of training in order to gain more information and experience in scoring the ADOS. However, they will not be able to actively participate in the “live” practicum experiences designed for those participating in the full session reliability training. At the end of the training, these trainees will know the basic components of the ADOS, will have seen them demonstrated, and will have had some practice in scoring the ADOS. Those who stay for the additional two days will have had additional experience scoring the ADOS and in seeing it administered. They will still need supervised practice in administering the ADOS before being ready to give the ADOS with supervision.

Dr. Horowitz received her B.S. in Biology from Furman University and M.A. and Ph.D. in School Psychology from USC. She currently is working at the Greenwood Genetic Center as part of the Clinical and Research Faculty. She was one of the two first School Psychologists for Charleston County Schools, the first Director of Child and Adolescent Services for Charleston Area Mental Health Center and while there was able to obtain basic and advanced training in autism treatment from the Judevine Center in St. Louis, Missouri. In private practice, she did therapy and assessment for children and adolescents, served as psychology consultant for a residential treatment center, contracted to provide yearly evaluations for children with autism for CCSD and was part-time elementary guidance counselor for CCSD. She served as Director of the Autistic Program for CCSD. She developed and directed the first CARE Center with clinics in Charleston, Columbia, and at MUSC as part of Autism Division, SC DDSN- later became the Charleston CARE Center.

Course Description:

This workshop series will summarize evidence-based practices for teaching meaningful skills to children and adults with autism. A particular focus will be on teaching strategies that are usually enjoyed by learners with autism, as well as specific ways to help make teaching sessions enjoyable in general. Following a summary of basic teaching procedures that have a scientific evidence base to support their effectiveness, new developments in teaching processes will be presented. The latter will include, for example, how to teach skills in a rapid or intensive fashion, embedding brief teaching procedures within ongoing interactions in natural settings, preference-based teaching, and simulation teaching for helping adolescents and adults with autism acquire skills to succeed in supported work. Teaching approaches will be described in a step-by-step manner followed by instructor demonstrations and where relevant, audience practice in role-play situations.

Dr. Christian A. Martin has over 15 years of experience working with young children, adults, and families with autism and other developmental disabilities, and provides behavior support services under the SCDDSN Medicaid Waiver Program. His interests include functional communication training, positive behavior and instructional support, and supporting individuals with autism. Currently, he serves as vice president of the South Carolina Association for Behavior Analysis and as an adjunct professor in the department of special education at the University of South Carolina. Over the past 7 years he has presented at both local and national conferences and is a current member of the National Honor Society in Psychology, South Carolina Autism Society, and International Association for Behavior Analysis.
